FED:Canberra New Year fireworks

CANBERRA, Dec 31 AAP - Tens of thousands are expected to flock to Civic for New Year's
Eve celebrations.

Two spectacular fireworks displays are planned, the first with young children in mind
at 9pm (AEST), ahead of the traditional display at midnight.

Each show will last for about 15 minutes, and should be visible throughout central Canberra.

Former Cold Chisel star Ian Moss will entertain New Year's Eve revellers in Civic Square
as the sun sets on 2011.

The multi-ARIA award winning musician, best known as the guitarist and occasional singer
for Cold Chisel during the 1980s, will give two performances, the first at 8.30pm (AEDT),
the second immediately after the 9pm (AEDT) fireworks display.

Other New Year's entertainment includes local Canberra bands Heuristic and the Bridge
Between, and a dance party in Garema Place from 9pm (AEDT).

The dance party will feature Ministry of Sound's Chris Fraser, DJ Rawson, KG and DJ Rush.

The Civic Square and Garema Place events are alcohol-free to encourage a safe and friendly
atmosphere.

ACTION Buses will operate to a normal Saturday timetable, with the Nightrider service

Ambulance personnel and police will be on hand.
