A match-play primer

International team golf is something new to Chicago. The Solheim Cup pits the top women's players from the United States against the top women's players from Europe. The three-day competition will feature match play rather than the stroke-play format used in most tournaments. In match play, the winner is determined by holes won rather than cumulative score. Here are some terms that will be pertinent this week:

Concessions: That's when one team concedes a hole to its opponent if there's no doubt a shot will be holed out. Every putt must be holed out in stroke play, but not in match play.
